Preparing for Holiday House Guests

If you are expecting house guests this holiday season, plan ahead to make their stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible for both your guests and your own family.

Make sure your guest room is comfortable
You probably don’t spend much time your guest room. Make sure it’s comfortable, clean and ready for house guests. Wash all the linens and prepare the bed. Be sure to include extra pillows. Set up a table or desk in the room, if possible, to let you guests have a little privacy and space. Vacuum everywhere, including under the bed to get rid of dust and dirt. Open up the windows and let some fresh air in. Make some room in the closet and bureau for their belongings.

Cook ahead meals and freeze them
You don’t want to spend every single night your guests are in town slaving in the kitchen. Cook ahead various dinners and freeze them. When preparing meals, keep in mind any dietary restrictions that your guests may have.

Communicate travel plans and guest expectations
A week or so before your guests arrive, talk to them about their travel plans. Are you expected to pick them up at the airport or will they be renting a car? Are they anticipating you will be able to take them sightseeing and dining every day throughout their visit? Be open and honest about your other time commitments and don’t stress out if you have to say “No” to some of your guests’ requests.

Plan activities and events for kids
If you guests are bringing children with them, plan games, activities and special events that they’ll enjoy. Stock up on books, board games and other age-appropriated items that their kids will like. If your own children are attending holiday parties or events, see if your guests’ kids will be able to join them.

Clean and freshen your home
Don’t wait until the night before to clean or you’ll be rushed and frenzied. Instead, clean your entire home two days before your guests arrive. On the morning of their arrival, you can quickly declutter and do any last minute cleaning as necessary. Relax and enjoy their visit. Don’t feel like you have to be in constant hostess mode; allow yourself to enjoy your holidays too!
