Since becoming a mom, I’ve noticed my overall level of frumpiness has increased dramatically. Showers come less often (dare I say) and I find myself living in velour and flip flops. Even though I realize this is a part of mommy hood, I must admit, I miss having all that extra time for hair, make-up and wardrobe. I miss my husband consistently seeing me showered, dressed in non-comfy clothes, hair done with make-on.
Now I realize that my current stage of life (8 ½ months prego with my second, the first just barely two-years old) is not conducive to all the fuss I once enjoyed, I think it’s important for us moms to treat ourselves to a little glam time every once in awhile. I think it’s safe to say that no one but us will make sure we get any, right?
One of the ways I try to channel my inner super-model (she’s in there somewhere I swear) is through our family photo sessions. I make sure that any session incorporates a little mom-diva time. I always choose my wardrobe first and then coordinate everyone else around me. (At the end of the day it takes practically no effort for my daughter to look adorable and my husband merely has to pick out a coordinating shirt to appear dashing himself.) I also take the time to get my hair and make-up done, which is a decadent experience in itself.
Our most recent session included some solo maternity shots of me as well. I’m always so glad I invest the time and money to capture photos like these because they are so nice to reflect on during my many not-so-pretty days.
What do you do to feel beautiful while wearing the many hats of a busy mom?

Love this. Seriously. Today I’m wearing my dress-up yoga pants…it’s so not the same.
Oh Cara, but I love my dress-up yoga pants…and my fancier sneakers of course.
I love this-I of course just got pics taken of the boys-not one of me! Ugh! So typical-me who?!?! When I am a big ol’ pregnant lady again with my 3rd-I am going full glam like you did-although you set the bar HIGH-those pics are fab!
Kelson – You will be gorgeous my friend, and once it’s your 3rd you will oh-so appreciate it!
Hey there Heather! I so agree that we moms never put ourselves first! On the days when I even just put on mascara and eyeliner, I feel SOOO much better. It makes a world of difference!
PS–welcome to RMG!
Thanks Stephanie!
ps Eyeliner is the difference between people recognizing me or not recognizing me…sad, but true.
Heather,
What a great idea to have your hair and makeup done for your photo session! I always try to do it all myself and end up late and frustrated ( and then not in the right mood for happy pictures lol). I will definitely use your idea!
It’s the best part Shawna, promise!
Have you all forgotten???? Look cute…. Wear your letters!!!!!!
Lesley – You are so funny!
Reading your blog post, I fell upon an Oprah ah-ha moment (I can’t believe I just wrote that … anyhow). For family portraits, I always put the boys’ (husband, son, and dog’s) outfits together first and end up scrambling the night before trying to pick something out of my outdated closet. Next family pic, I’m following your advice and putting myself first in line. Fun read, thanks!
Ivette – It’s hard being the only woman in a house full of rowdy men sometimes. =)
I must confess, when we had our recent family portraits taken I went shopping to find my perfect outfit, then I shopped for my daughter’s coordinating dress, and then I went into my husbands closet to find a shirt he could wear that would look decent with our looks! I did my own make-up but got a mani/pedi and my hair blown-out. I sure felt pretty that day. Most weekends I’m in my velours and flip flops too – Thank you juicy and havaianas
Yes Krissy, love my juicy and havaiana uniform!
Yes! Good call Heather…must remember to pamper the mama once in a while so we remain “women and wives”, not just permanently in our “mom” hat…I think I might schedule a mani/pedi and maybe even a massage now that you’ve inspired me to feel pretty…lol
A massage sounds perfect Dez!
What an ephiphany! Seriously, why didn’t I think of getting myself an outfit first and coordinating everyone elses? Ha! Us mommies putting everyone else first! Thanks Heather!
Thanks Heather!
Oh Heather, you are so super gorgeous even in your sweats and flip flops
Taking pictures of you was so easy!! And yes, I totally agree that taking a “mommy time-out” to get your make up and hair done before a family photo shoot is the best way to spoil yourself. Seriously, it makes you feel so good!
“Easy” is probably a stretch, but thank you…what would I have done without a fabulously talented photographer. =)
Great posts Heather! I enjoy reading them..even though I’m not a mommy.
And…I love seeing all your supermodel photos shoots…you look fabulous as always! what a great family. xoxo
