All of us are trying to cut back and save a little money these days. Instead of cutting deep from one area of your budget, save in little ways that really add up.
Save on your energy bill
Switch over to energy-efficient appliances — including the refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer. Most energy companies will give you a rebate for installing these appliances, and you’ll save big on your electric/gas bill in the long run. Replace all your traditional light bulbs with CFLs. You should also turn off all TVs, computers and other electronics when you aren’t using them.
Turn your thermostat down a few degrees in the winter and up a few degrees in the summer. Just 2-3 degrees can save you big on your electric bill.
To save money on gas, reduce your carbon footprint and get a little exercise, never drive anywhere that you can walk. Walking is a fun family activity that can keep you fit.
Save on your water bill
Everyone knows you shouldn’t leave the water running while you brush your teeth and you should only shower for 10 minutes, but here’s what else you can do to save water. Don’t run the tap while you are washing lettuce and other veggies — just soak them in a bowl. Then use the leftover water to water your houseplants.
Install a water saving showerhead — it will reduce the amount of water you and your family use by up to 50%. An ultra-low-flow toilet is also worth the investment. Fix all your leaks and drippy faucets as soon as you discover them.
Save on your grocery bill
You don’t have to stop buying name brands altogether, but experiment and try store or generic brands. Most store labels are created by the same manufacturers as the brands that you already trust — but are just a lot cheaper.
Plan your meals ahead. By creating your meal plan, you can know exactly what ingredients and items you need at the grocery store and reduce impulse buying. Buy fruits and vegetables in season. And only buy in bulk if it’s something that you are going to use.
Get your kids to drink water instead of soft drinks. Not only is water healthier, it’s a lot more inexpensive.
Also, take advantage of double-coupon days and other store specials. Just remember — don’t buy it if it wasn’t already on your grocery list.

We were JUST talking about the kids drinking more water TONIGHT! In fact, it was my daughter’s idea, who is going to have to get some cavities filled. She realizes she should start eating and drinking better!
