5 Ways to Be a Good Parent

We all strive to raise our children the right way. And though we all parent differently, there are some general guidelines that will help your kids to grow up happy, healthy and responsible.

Show your love every day
Fill your child’s life with hugs, kisses and expressions of love. Let your kids know how special they are and how much you love them. Make time to do simple things together — reading, playing, cuddling and just hanging out.

Provide structure in their lives
Kids should have a regular (yet flexible) schedule for meals, naps, baths, bedtime, etc. Children need to know what is expected to feel safe and learn to be responsible.

Praise them
Praise children when they behave well, learn something new or create something on their own. Let them know every day that you are proud of them for learning, growing and behaving.

Criticize bad behavior, not the child
If your kid makes a mistake or does something wrong, avoid saying, “You were bad.” Criticize the bad behavior without criticizing the child. Explain why their behavior was wrong/unsafe and what they should do instead.

Be consistent
Stay consistent with your family rules and consequences. Be very clear about what you expect from your child. Your family rules don’t have to be the same as your neighbors or relatives have in their homes, just make sure your own children understand the rules and the reasoning behind them.
