Until last weekend, I thought geocaching had to take place in super rural areas and great big parks and places that I’d have to pack provisions and sunscreen and other pain in the butt accessories to find. It turns out, geocaches are hidden all over my local community. My husband bought the app for his iPhone and after a quick lunch, we took the kids to a local park to find our first cache together.
The kids ended up being far more enthused by the playground than by their parents making fools of themselves climbing oak trees and hiding trinkets in little plastic eggs, but I loved it! There’s something really fun about sneaking around a park I’ve visited my whole life, and viewing it with a new sense of adventure.
This spring, I’m determined to spend more time outdoors having adventures with my boys. It might mean some birdwatching, or a trip to the beach, or more geocaching. (So far we’re 50/50, having located one cache and completely failed at locating the other.)
I’m fortunate to live in Florida, where the weather has been in the mid-80′s all week. How’s your weather? Are you gearing up for some adventures outside with your children?

Hello, sweet Maria! I just had to comment, because we live in FL, too…which I think I’ve told you before. But anyway, we can totally geocache 99% of the time in our sunny state. For us, it’s become a regular weekend activity. I’m so glad you guys liked it! We tried finding this one geocache SIX TIMES before we finally found it; it was hidden so stealthily, it had to have been placed by an ex-CIA member. Keep up the treasure-hunting, so I don’t feel like the lone, weirdo geocaching-mom.
