TV: best shows about parenting

Ok, truth is, I don’t watch much TV. But when I do watch, I tend to watch dramas about families. Here’s a list of my faves (past and present) (thank God for Hulu and Netflix!)

Parenthood- currently on NBC on Tuesday nights, I love this show mainly for the closeness of the adult siblings and how involved they are in each others complicated lives. (I kinda hope the same for my four kids, only if they don’t team up and talk about all the things I did wrong as a mother.) P.S. life is complicated, I like that they keep it real with relevant struggles every parent has.

Mildred Pierce- Mildred is a phenomenal character study, played by one of my favorite actresses, Kate Winslet. She rises up as a single mother during the Great Depression amidst her own life’s tragedies and destruction. This is a miniseries on HBO right now and I’m going to be sad when it’s over!

Arrested Development- I came to heart this hilarious show very late in the game, but thankfully someone you know probably has the DVDs or you can watch it on Netflix. I can’t choose who is my favorite. Every single cast member is genius. It is probably more of a “what you should not do” as a parent, but the family dynamic is a hilarious art, and also, you might realize your own family isn’t so bad afterall. Or? You feel like you are home. Win/win.

Brothers and Sisters- I got caught up on this series on Netflix as well, and was hooked in the first few episodes. Again with the adult siblings and how their lives intertwine (I can’t help it!) and the curve balls life throws along the way. I have grown a bit bored with this year’s storyline Sunday nights on ABC, but the first few seasons are absolutely fabulous.

Modern Family- Same here with not being able to choose a favorite character. I love each “house” and the family that lives in it. Who knew Ed O’Neill (Married With Children) could be so charming and cute? On Wednesday nights on ABC; I am never at a loss for laughs while watching this show, and so much of it has my husband and I turning to each other saying, “it’s funny ’cause it’s true!”

Parenting, family, or not- what are your favorite shows to watch after the kids have gone to bed?
