Not your mother’s baby gadget

April 12, 2011 |  by

Gone are the days of cloth diapers (for most of us at least) and riding in the car with your baby in the front seat next to you, or even worse, on your lap a la Britney Spears.

My mother is always whining about taking note of all the fancy baby products that have become necessities for many modern moms — about how somehow, someway, they survived without all this “stuff.”  So, I decided to survey my mommy friends to find out what their fave baby products are that didn’t exist a few decades ago.

Video Monitor

Interestingly, this seemed to be the device that received the most votes.  I did not have this little wonder camera with my first, but do have one now for my almost three-month old.  I especially like using this when I’m in the backyard with my two-year old, since convincing her to come inside for brief moments so I can check on baby sis is a long-shot.

Hooter Hider

The name may make you laugh, but these nursing covers are a God send for modest breastfeeding in public places.  They come in all sorts of trendy fabrics and are shaped so you can peek down to check on your babe discreetly.

Snap and Go Car Seat Stroller Frame

I LOVE my Snap and Go Car Seat Stroller Frame for my infant car seat.  It’s light, easy to open up, and best of all, allows me to leave my little one in her infant seat whether in the car or on the go by foot.

Bumbo

Aaahhh, the Bumbo baby seat, we used this for months as a way to feed my daughter before she was able to sit properly in her high chair.  Also, great for when you want to be able to have your little one sit upright without having to hold them yourself.

Electric Breast Pump

Hallah! What did women do before the advent of this little miracle device?  I guess never leave their nursing baby for more than an hour or so…because I’ve tried those hand-express pumps, and let’s face it, they just don’t do the job an electric pump can do.  And sometimes mama needs a little reprieve from her bambina, even if it’s just to have the luxury to miss one feeding.

Diaper Genie

Thankfully, these discreet little diaper pails magically contain your diapers and help with the not-so-fresh smell that comes from…well…you know.

Boppy

Words really cannot express how fond I am of my Boppy.  I’ve used it for nursing, bottle-feeding, reading a bedtime book, not to mention all the times both my girls have loved to just chill, snuggled up in it.  Who knew something as simple as a u-shaped pillow could be so handy?

What are your favorite modern baby products?  What items do you think are a little ridiculous?  For example, I think a wipe warmer is a little much.
