I recently read an article that got me thinking. Thinking even more about something that had already been on my mind. As my fortieth birthday looms (I’m 38 and counting) I’ve been putting a lot of thought into something really, really, really important…
my hair.
My long hair, that is.
I’ve been wondering if I’m going to have to chop it off.
If I’m supposed to march into my hairdresser and order up a bob, stat.
Because at forty, I’ll be too *gulp* old for tresses past my shoulder.
But in the aforementioned article that hairdresser says, no, long hair does not have to be cut off. And I’ll admit that I breathed a sigh of relief to hear that opinion. Because I worried that the answer would be yes. Because society can put so much pressure on us to think things have to be a certain way- especially when it comes to our physical appearance.
And now that I have my own daughter, I want her to know that she does not have to conform to what society’s expectations of her are.
And the truth is, I love my long hair. And I’m not ready to chop it off. Forty’s the new twenty anyway, right?

I say rock the long hair!
I will say though, that if you’re 40 sporting pigtails or something “childlike” maybe its time to cut it off!
