I often find myself telling my husband a story about a friend, and I start with something like, “My friend, Jane, you know the one from the online book club I was in…” or “I was laughing because Rebecca, you know the one whose blog I read…” It sounds a little silly saying it out loud, but yes, there are several people who I consider friends who I’ve never even met in real life, as they say. Though we “see” each other online on a regular basis, many physical miles separate us making an actual meetup unrealistic.
We’ve emailed, had Facebook or Twitter conversations, or even gone so far as to chat on the phone. We’ve shared pictures of our children (all adorable, of course), shared laughs over online humor, and shared personal stories that prove to me that friendship can take many different forms. While I’ve never gotten a hug from any of these pals, I know they always have a virtual shoulder for me to cry on if needed.
I am thankful for each and every friend in my life, whether they’re right around the corner or on the other side of the country. I appreciate all of our interactions, and I know that my online friends are a wonderful batch of women who will listen, via email or messaging, anytime I need them. Oh internet, how I adore you and what you make possible!
