Obsessed with British television? Find out what to watch.

If your nerd tendencies run more Doctor Who than Star Trek, you might be a little obsessed with British TV.  If you have no idea what I’m talking about, never fear.  I’ll introduce you to some shows that will have you sneaking British idioms into your vocabulary and shopping for tea in no time.  Many American TV viewers associate British TV with Monty Python and nothing more.  Not that there’s anything wrong with Monty Python!  But there’s stuff out there for many tastes.  Here are a few shows I recommend checking out.

Misfits

Misfits is about delinquent teens get super powers.  Action and comedy ensue.  If you liked edgy, funny shows like Dead Like Me and Weeds, you’ll enjoy this crazy fun show with lots of action and romance. (And yes, sex.)  This isn’t a family show.  Even if you’re not usually a sci-fi fan, this one may appeal to you on sheer quirky likeability.  Check it out on Hulu.

Downton Abbey

No, it’s not DownTOWN Abbey.  This period piece may have frilly dresses and stuffy lords and ladies, but it’s really more of a soap opera with forbidden romance, murder mysteries and an enchanting cast of characters that will make you want to hug them or throw them off a cliff.  Catch it on PBS.

Merlin

This show plays late on ScyFy, but it’s worth recording on your DVR to watch with older kids.  Merlin is a fun take on Arthurian legend that sets the characters in their late teens and early 20′s, making them easier to relate to as they begin their path to legend.  It’s a dinner time family show in the UK, and is mild enough for kids around seven and up.  Catch Seasons 1-3 on Netflix streaming.

Doctor Who

Wondering where to start on this legacy of about nine million episodes?  Try starting with Season 5.  You can catch it on Netflix Streaming or BBC America in re-reruns.  The time-traveling adventure series a little cheesy, with a lot of heart.  Young kids might be scared by some of the monsters and suspense, but this is a family show and great for sharing with older kids.
