I have a lot of respect for moms who aren’t afraid to be honest and share the tough times as well as the good times. And many celebrity moms are no exception, some opening up about serious challenges they’ve faced while trying to conceive. When women like Bethenny Frankel, Giuliana Rancic and Maria Carey talk publicly about their struggles with trying to get pregnant, I believe it helps other women who are also going through the same thing.
Bethenny Frankel shares miscarriage story
I’m a huge fan of Bethenny Frankel. She’s candid, whip smart and witty as hell. And when it comes to motherhood she’s always shared (and sometimes even overshared) about her very real experiences. On the Today show, when asked if she had plans to have a second child, she revealed that she was pregnant, but miscarried at eight weeks. I admire her courage to be able to share such an intensely private and painful side of motherhood- the struggle to conceive. Bethenny said, “I’m 41 it’s a very personal question. We were pregnant with a second baby and at eight weeks I miscarried. That was a very emotional experience. I’m not thinking about it. I have an incredible daughter. I have truthfully thought about other women, more than myself. Oh my God, I can’t believe what people go through who can’t have the one.”
Season three of Bethenny Ever After (one of my favorite shows) premiered last night and there were many moments involving her absolutely adorable daughter, Bryn. This is a hilarious show about Bethenny’s take on balancing motherhood, marriage, a booming business (did you see her on the cover of Forbes?) should definitely be one of your weekly musts, airing on Mondays on Bravo. Sadly, this will be the final season, BUT, she’ll still be on TV- she’s heading over to daytime!
Giuliana Rancic suffers miscarriage and is diagnosed with breast cancer
Giuliana Rancic, also the star of a reality show, Giuliana and Bill, has been very open about her struggles to conceive, even allowing cameras to follow her and her husband Bill Rancic as they tried to get pregnant and suffered a miscarriage. Always the eternal optimist, she stayed strong even as her best friend and sister had children. It was while preparing to undergo a third IVF (invitro fertilization) treatment that doctors discovered her breast cancer. She bravely chose to undergo a double masectomy and when questioned about how her decision would affect her job as the host of E!, Rancic said, “I don’t give two sh**s about my breasts. I didn’t care that at the Golden Globes, I wouldn’t be able to show cleavage,” she said, adding that many people were surprised by her decision to have the surgery. “They said, ‘Are you sure you want to do this? Think about the life you lead and the fabulous dresses and that’s part of your job. It could put your job in jeopardy.’ And I thought, if I ever have a job that is defined by my breasts and some gorgeous gown then I’m in the wrong business.”
I love her! She’s such a breath of fresh air. I wish her only the absolute best with her recovery!
Giuliana and Bill was renewed for a fifth season (premieres Mon., April 2 at 8 p.m. EST on Style) and will include Giuliana’s battle against breast cancer.
Maria Carey suffered a miscarriage before becoming pregnant with twins
Last year, Maria Carey (41) revealed that she suffered a miscarriage before becoming pregnant with her twins, Morrocan (named after the room husband, Nick Cannon proposed to her in) and Monroe (now nine-months-old). She said the loss was devastating and inspired her to change her lifestyle and become more Zen-like–even trying acupuncture to help her relax. She said she also underwent fertility treatments to get pregnant again, which included taking progesterone, a hormone that reduces the risk of miscarriage by half.
Proud papa Nick Cannon recently gushed about his sons.
My heart goes out to all of these women who were strong enough to come forward and talk about what they’ve gone through–and to the many others who’ve also done the same.

this is a great article. I know about these women and their celebrity, but I didn’t really know about all of their struggles. Thanks for sharing!
I love this, Lisa. What a great write up. I’ve read about all of their stories, but you did such a great job capturing them. I couldn’t agree with you more about honesty and being real.
Oh, and I love Giuliana for what she said about the boobs and the dresses. Her career? How about her life?!
