About Maria

Maria Mora of Mommy Melee works full time from a home office. She is fueled by coffee, questionable time management skills and toaster oven waffles. She co-founded Shop Sensory, a website that shares resources related to Sensory Processing Disorder and special needs. Maria is the mother of two boys. Her older son has Asperger's Syndrome and is hands down the best robot dancer on the planet.

What’s your inspiration?

I draw inspiration from unlikely places all the time. I love this line from the Sublime song, Scarlet Begonias: Once in a while you get shown the light / in the strangest of places if you look at it right. (Okay it's originally by the Grateful Dead but I really prefer the cover.) One thing I consistently draw inspiration from is the creativity of others. Basically, I want to be as awesome as the people I admire.

What’s the one thing you can’t live without?

Sleep. I mean, I know I literally cannot live without sleep but if I don't get enough sleep I become a complete psycho. I cry or yell about everything. It... isn't pretty.

What’s your favorite part of being a mom?

Talking to my children. Now that my older son is four, we have the longest, weirdest conversations. It's fascinating.

What’s the single best piece of advice you can share with other moms?

No matter how crazy things are, you have to trust that you're not the first person to experience what you're experiencing. So please, please don't be afraid to talk about how you feel.

I'm not a regular Glee viewer, but I watched the first two seasons avidly.  Last night, I decided to watch it and find out how things have changed since I last checked in with the McKinley High kids.  I expected a lot of show choir drama over regionals, so the

I believe that beginner knitters should start out with the cheapest acrylic yarn possible. You’re going to hate and likely destroy the first half a dozen things you make, so why spend more than $3 on the yarn? But after that, when you start to love your projects and you

Organic Living: What about the nuggets?

My kids hate “meat.” Or so they think. Because they love hot dogs, pepperoni and chicken nuggets. But if I bread organic chicken cutlets and bake them, they poke the meat and complain and won’t eat any of it. Apparently they’re not “real” nuggets. I’ve looked into buying organic chicken

I have less than fond memories of lugging my backpack around in middle school, high school and college. There was always that one textbook that weighed about five million pounds. I swear I couldn’t walk more than 30 feet without my whole back aching, no matter how correctly I wore

Opening Up: Because we can’t keep this stuff inside

The other day, I called a mom friend who was going through really tough times with a toddler in the hospital. As soon as she picked up, she started venting, laying on the swear words and the emotions, her voice wavering with tears. We hung out that day, and I
